Hong Kong’s Biggest Bank Puts a Stablecoin in 3 Million Wallets
香港最大银行将稳定币放入300万个钱包
HSBC is testing whether a bank-issued token can become everyday money, and the answer depends on whether PayMe's 3 million users actually adopt it over existing payment rails.
Judgment
HSBC is betting that its more than 3.3 million PayMe users will shift everyday payments onto a bank-issued Hong Kong dollar stablecoin instead of leaving money on existing rails; adoption, not the license, decides whether RedCoin becomes money.
Basis
Per Decrypt's Jose Antonio Lanz, HSBC switched on its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, RedCoin, licensed by the HKMA, inside the PayMe app on Friday. The mechanism is distribution through HSBC's own consumer install base: more than 3.3 million PayMe users can activate wallets in the coming days and send the token from within the app. That caps the initial float at whatever share of those 3.3 million actually activates, and caps usefulness at whether recipients and merchants treat RedCoin as settlement rather than a stored balance. The bank, not a public chain or third-party exchange, controls issuance and the wallet layer, so the token's reach is bounded by PayMe's own footprint.
Unclear The source does not say what reserves back RedCoin, whether redemption at par is guaranteed outside PayMe, or whether transfers and conversions carry fees.
Next When wallet activation opens, check HSBC's RedCoin disclosure for reserve composition, redemption terms and any fee schedule.
