Google’s AI search changes upended online publishing
谷歌AI搜索变革颠覆了网络出版业
Publishers now face a hard tradeoff after Google's AI search changes, since the traffic they once earned from optimized pages may no longer reach them.
Judgment
Publishers now have to decide whether to keep spending on SEO-optimized pages that Google’s AI Overviews can summarize, or move that budget into channels they control—accepting lower search exposure and a higher cost to build direct audience.
Basis
Emma Roth’s Verge column traces the shift: Google launched AI Overviews in 2024, placing an AI-generated summary atop Search with source links below, then launched AI Mode in May 2025 as a chatbot-like interface that summarizes web results. The mechanism is that publishers can supply the underlying content but lose the guaranteed click, because users may read the summary without visiting the source. The News/Media Alliance told the outlet the feature would be “catastrophic” to web traffic. A 2024 Press Gazette investigation found AI Overviews appeared for almost a quarter of news-related searches in May 2024, and by August the outlet found they were replacing media sites that had held top spots for certain queries.
Unclear The source does not quantify how much publisher traffic or revenue has fallen, nor name which publishers have cut or reallocated SEO spending.
