Anthropic is burning gas to feed the AI boom
Anthropic正烧天然气助推AI热潮
Anthropic's S-1 reveals its AI buildout depends on natural gas, exposing the company to fuel cost and supply chain risks as it prepares to go public.
Judgment
Anthropic executives and its IPO investors face a sharper tradeoff: lock in on-site natural gas turbines to keep data-center buildout on schedule, or accept delays and higher power-procurement costs while fuel and turbine shortages persist.
Basis
Anthropic's S-1, filed Monday with the SEC, says data centers are increasingly reliant on natural gas and that "competition for access to electrical supply and data center locations with adequate power availability is intense." The mechanism: Anthropic leases hyperscaler capacity but announced a $50 billion plan to expand data centers in Texas and New York; some planned sites rely on on-site gas turbines. A turbine shortage is slowing construction, so developers install on-site gas engines and simpler turbine technology to avoid grid interconnection waits, making power less efficient and more polluting. Anthropic also says competition for gas and pipeline capacity from hyperscalers "could drive up the price of natural gas," and climate change will raise electricity and water costs for cooling. Gas is 40 percent of US power generation.
Unclear The source does not quantify how much of Anthropic's planned Texas and New York capacity will be gas-fired or what fuel-cost increase it models.
Next Check the S-1 for whether Anthropic discloses the megawatts or percentage of its Texas and New York data-center capacity served by on-site gas turbines.
