From synthetic enterprise data evaluations to real Microsoft Copilot AI confidence
从合成企业数据评测到真实的 Microsoft Copilot AI 信心
Microsoft's research shows a practical tradeoff: Copilot enterprise evaluation needs realistic organizations but privacy rules bar using real data, forcing reliance on synthetic tests.
Judgment
Microsoft's Copilot evaluation team, led by Somya Chatterjee and colleagues, must decide whether synthetic "tenant" benchmarks count as sufficient proof of enterprise quality — accepting a fidelity gap in exchange for never touching customer data, or funding consented real-world pilots.
Basis
In a Microsoft Research Blog post published October 30, 2026, Somya Chatterjee, Harshita Sahijwani, Min Chen, Sushmitha Rajeswari Muppa, Dayquan Julienne, Irene Shaffer, Chandra Inguva, Jenny Chen, Minha Hwang and Sam Ade Jacobs describe the Industry Evaluation Data Generation Platform. The mechanism has three pillars: full-scale synthetic enterprise environments (called "tenants" — isolated workspaces with their own users, data and configurations), automated query generation pipelines for reproducible dataset creation, and structured quality frameworks. Environments are grounded in public sources — O*NET occupational data, online job postings and SEC filings — and safety is enforced by design: every environment is fully synthetic and automated content-safety checks keep generated data free of harmful or personally identifiable material. The stated aim is the first standardized evaluation baseline for Microsoft Copilot, so teams can answer whether Copilot does what users need and prove it without touching their data.

Unclear The post gives no scale figures — tenant counts, dataset sizes, or any measured accuracy difference between synthetic and real enterprise evaluations — so the size of the fidelity tradeoff is unquantified.
Next Check whether a follow-up Microsoft Research publication or the platform's code release reports baseline Copilot scores plus tenant or query counts that would let outsiders judge synthetic-versus-real fidelity.
